Namaste and hello again from Glasgow!
It's hard to believe that it's been over two years since I made the incredible move from India to Glasgow, Scotland! September 2022 marked the beginning of my Master's journey at the prestigious University of Glasgow, and I'm thrilled to say I'm still here, living and loving life in this amazing city! As an international student from India, settling into a new country was a big adventure, but the warmth of Glaswegians and the vibrant energy of Glasgow have made it feel like home.
Choosing Glasgow University for my higher education in the UK was a decision based on its excellent academics, but also on the unique appeal of Glasgow itself. Known as the "Dear Green Place", Glasgow promised a dynamic urban experience alongside beautiful green spaces, and it has truly delivered on that promise and so much more.
One of the most captivating aspects of Glasgow is its rich history. Every corner of this city whispers tales of the past. Glasgow's story began way back in the 6th century with St Mungo, and tracing its evolution through the centuries is fascinating. From the grandeur of the Victorian architecture to the tangible remnants of its industrial heritage, Glasgow’s past is ever-present and adds a unique depth to the city's character.
Glasgow's former title as the "Second City of the British Empire" is no exaggeration. The River Clyde was the lifeblood of this booming industrial hub, powering shipbuilding and global trade. The impressive Victorian warehouses lining the Clyde and the striking Finnieston Crane stand as proud monuments to this era. A visit to the interactive Riverside Museum, a Zaha Hadid masterpiece, offers an immersive journey into Glasgow's fascinating maritime and industrial legacy.
However, Glasgow is a city that constantly evolves, never resting on its historical laurels. The Merchant City, once the domain of wealthy traders, has transformed into a chic and stylish district, brimming with trendy boutiques, art galleries, and fantastic restaurants. The West End, anchored by the University, retains its bohemian and intellectual spirit, offering a vibrant mix of cafes, independent shops, and cultural hotspots. Glasgow is a city of captivating contrasts, seamlessly blending its historical grandeur with a forward-thinking, modern outlook.
And speaking of history and grandeur, the University of Glasgow campus is a historical marvel in itself! Dating back to 1451, it’s the fourth oldest university in the English-speaking world and a true architectural gem. Walking through the iconic University cloisters, with their gothic arches and time-worn stones, is like stepping back in time. The privilege of studying within these hallowed halls, combined with the breathtaking panoramic views of Glasgow from the University tower, is an experience I truly cherish.
But beyond the impressive landmarks and historical significance, it's the warmth of the Glaswegian people that has truly made Glasgow feel like home. Despite being thousands of miles from India and experiencing a different culture, I've been met with incredible Glaswegian friendliness and genuine helpfulness at every turn. Navigating a new city and understanding the unique Glaswegian dialect ("patter") has been made so much easier by the kindness and patience of the locals. There's a strong sense of community here, and as an Indian student living in Glasgow, I've felt welcomed and supported from day one.
Glasgow also knows how to enjoy life! The city's legendary music scene is a constant source of excitement, offering everything from traditional Scottish folk music to cutting-edge indie and electronic sounds. Exploring the diverse live music venues and experiencing the buzzing Glasgow nightlife is a must for anyone living here. And for moments of peace and tranquility, Glasgow truly lives up to its "Dear Green Place" nickname. The city is dotted with stunning parks and green spaces, offering havens of nature amidst the urban landscape. Kelvingrove Park, practically on the University doorstep, and the tranquil Botanic Gardens are just a couple of my favourite escapes.
Moving to Glasgow as an Indian student has been an extraordinary journey, and I'm so grateful to call this city home. Glasgow has given me not only a world-class education at the University of Glasgow but also a rich and welcoming cultural experience, a strong sense of community, and a city brimming with history, beauty, and that unmistakable Glaswegian warmth. For anyone considering studying in Scotland or seeking a vibrant, historic, and genuinely friendly city to live in, look no further than Glasgow!
